The
Park Clinic was established in 1993 by Richard Lanigan DC BSc (Chiro) MSc and Ole Wessung DC to provide chiropractic treatment, for people living in Kingston upon Thames. It is the longest established spinal health clinic in Kingston, our success is based on the principle that satisfied clients refer their friends and family.
- 84% of adults suffer back pain at some time in their lives.
- 64% of workers regularly suffer muscular pain in the neck shoulders and upper limbs.
- In 17% of this group the pain becomes chronic.
- On average, chronic pain lasts for 4. 9 years.
- 19% live with chronic pain for more than 20 years.
- There has been an exponential rise in back and neck pain since computers became common place. Chronic pain accounts for nearly 500 million lost work days in Europe every year
By definition chronic pain is a failure of treatment in its early stage. Most back problems are mechanical in nature and while pain medication can relieve symptoms it does nothing for the mechanical dysfunction of spinal joints. The huge increase of people with chronic pain is the result of inadequate managment of the problem in its early stage. The spine protects the spinal cord and spinal joint dysfunction produces pain and affects the nervous system’s ability to maintain healthy physiology. Research shows spinal manipulation (SMT) is the most effective intervention to restore movement to spinal joints that have lost their range of motion. Predominantly used by chiropractors, osteopaths, in May 2009 the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excelence NICE produced its NHS guidelines for the management of low back pain for the NHS and recommended SMT rather than, electro therapy, traction and injections into the back.
Sedentary Posture, Trauma and Chiropractic
Humans have evolved from hunter gatherers, however since the 1950s our lifestyle has become increasingly sedentary. Our spines have not had time to adapt in this minute period of evolution, resulting in a huge increase in health problems such as back and leg pain, sciatica, headaches and migraines, neck shoulder and arm pain, pins and needles, whiplash, poor posture. Sports and trauma injuries, degenerative problems like arthritis in an ageing population also contribute to these pain syndromes. Babies and children can benefit from chiropractic, osteopathy and spinal health care as conditions like colic, ear infection, asthma can be caused by spinal nerve irritation. Back, limb pain and headaches have resulted in a huge increase in the pain and anti-inflammatory medication people are taking which have side effects. In addition “bad backs” have led to other health problems, particularly obesity which is a major threat to public health. These people are caught in a vicious cycle having developed back problems, unable to exercise they gain weight and are susceptible to diabetes and heart disease. Chiropractic treatment can help these people.
Nerve irritation and treating the cause of pain.
The goal of our practitioners is to have you return to normal activity as soon as possible, and help optimise your wellbeing. The reason you are looking at this site is probably because you are experiencing pain caused by nerve irritation, taking pills is only masking an underlying problem. Unfortunately due to poor management early in its course some people have no other option than pain relieving medication and the accompanying side effects.
If you had a stone in your shoe causing pain the sensible thing to do would be to see if removing the stone helped before resorting to medication. Our practitioners attempt to establish what is causing your problem and get you off pain medication ASAP. Then a "Swiss Ball" rehabilitation programme is provided to strengthen your "core" muscles and prevent recurrences.
After the first visit which only costs £50 if we can help, we provide a written report of the consultation, examination findings and our prognosis.
